Domestic, Commercial & Industrial Contractors on the Isle Of Wight

Lemlec Ltd was originally established in 1980 by Mr Frank Louch, a very close family friend. During its heyday, Frank had around 12 engineers working for him and had the pleasure of working with the Priory Bay Hotel and re-wiring it as well as designing and installing a bespoke electrical system for Ventnor Brewery. A very small snippet into the vast & successful history of the business. Since 2016 Lemlec has been in safe new hands. Ryan Smith-Matthews the Managing Director of Lemlec had the honour of working with Frank for around 5 years before sadly, Frank passed away. During this time Mr Louch had shared over 55 Years of electrical, practical and customer service skills with Ryan so he could instil all the same principles of expert workmanship and outstanding customer service that Lemlec became known for.

Portable appliance testing (PAT) is the term used to describe the examination of electrical appliances and equipment to ensure they are safe to use.

Initial verification of new installations – The purpose of this inspection is to verify that the installed equipment complies with BS 7671 and that it is not visibly damaged or defective so as to impair safety. When a new installation has been completed or parts of an old installation altered or extended, it must be tested to ensure that it is safe to use. This process is the initial verification.

Minor works – Where minor electrical installation work does not include the provision of a new circuit, a Minor Electrical Installation Works Certificate may be provided for each circuit altered or extended as an alternative to the Electrical Installation Certificate.

Electrical installation condition reports – The electrical installation condition report (EICR) is a basic safety and condition report of electrical supply that will need to be undertaken at various points during the life of your home. You may also hear this referred to as a periodic inspection report (PIR), which it was previously known as.

The main advantage is that they do not heat up in the same way as an incandescent bulb and use a lot less energy – up to 80% less. If for no other reason, you should use low energy lighting to save money. Electricity is expensive, and you pay for the amount that you use, so if you use less you pay less. The current building regulations (part L) require dedicated low energy lighting to be installed in at least 30% of habitable rooms.

If a property has not already been rewired within the last 25-30 years, the chances are it will need upgrading at least in part in order to bring it up to current standards. The wiring may be potentially dangerous and may not be able to cope with the demands of modern living. If you are extending your home or converting an attic or garage, this will constitute new work and therefore all of the new wirings will have to conform to Part P: Electrical Safety and all existing wiring will have to be improved to ensure that it is able to carry the additional loads safely, it is earthed to current requirements and that bonding is satisfactory.

Although your older fuse board (assumed to be rewireable fuses) continued to supply your electricity needs, the form of protection would be a minimal 5amp fuse wire that until it overloaded and burnt out would continue to supply fault current – which in a fault state could kill. Latest fuse boards/consumer units contain RCD protection devices which trip the supply on a detected earth fault at 30 milliamps in milliseconds, thus reducing as much as possible the chance of fatal shock. The overload device fuse / MCB is protecting the circuit from overload only.
